January 24, 1997, Mufreesboro TN. A day that changed Amy’s life and planted a seed for the future…Huntsville Hugs. Her apartment complex was hit that day by a tornado and left her apartment uninhabitable. She was able to obtain a few items from the rubble and was allowed to stay at the hotel she was working at. Unfortunately, Amy, being in college and living on bare necessities, didn’t have renters insurance. Fortunately for her, the apartment management staff added her name to a list requested by agencies and local churches willing to help those who had encountered this sudden loss. This kindness Amy never forgot and as a 22 year old college student, she vowed she would give back to her community as soon as she was able. When the tornado outbreak of 2011 happened, Amy started a project to assist children in the community with a shoe box filled with activities like coloring books and items that did not require power. She was able to assist 1,000 children during the weeks that followed the power outages.
Since then, Amy has been assisting single parents who have found themselves in a situation of uncertainty – from a house fire, tornado survivor, divorce, and tragic accidents- with baskets full of house hold items. Items that are essential needs, but often forgotten or not affordable when trying to start a new chapter quickly.
In 2025 Huntsville Hugs supported 7 single moms, helped a family of five rebuild after a tornado, and brought Christmas joy to two young children. Community generosity turned compassion into action. Every donation — big or small — made a real difference and reminded parents that they are not alone.
Huntsville Hugs exists because of community, and we are deeply thankful for each person who supported this mission. Thank you for showing up, giving generously, and hugging our community so well.
